Sim's Birthday Climb

Sim's grandma and grandpa gave him the gift of a trip to a climbing gym for his birthday this year, and we had the chance to go this afternoon.  We had a great time!  I took a ton of pictures; here are a few highlights.

The birthday boy going for an epic climb:

He reached the top on his first time, a first for our children.

Hannah was the next to make her ascent.  She had climbed before and was looking forward to a second shot.

The other three children watch in admiration.  Tess came along just for the ride.

Naomi had a great time climbing, too -- she found it a little more challenging, since the handholds aren't really in the right spots for her height, but she was very determined.

And very victorious!

Tess spent an hour climbing onto the onlooker's bench and jumping onto the padded floor, over and over again.  She couldn't get enough of that floor.

We had a really great time -- by the end of the hour, all three climbers had tired arms and hands, but big smiles.

And we even discovered that there was a franchise of our favorite donut shop on the way home from the climbing gym.  Score!  Big thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for the lovely gift!

Now she knows the name

but when Tess first learned about convertibles, she couldn’t remember the name.  So when she saw one on the freeway, she told me, “Look, Mama!  An incredible!”

We tried this

homemade frappuccino recipe and the verdict was that it was awesome.

One year for Felix

And what a year it’s been!

IMG_1420

Felix lives up to his name most of the time – he’s a very happy baby.  And he’s nearly a toddler, although I’ll call him a baby for a long time yet.  In the last couple of weeks he learned a couple of words:  Mama, and uh-oh.  Mama is his favorite thing to say and his favorite person.

IMG_1336

But he also really loves Daddy, Hannah, Naomi, Sim, and Tess, and he knows the signs for each of them.  He knows the signs for bunny, fish, duck, bird, and dog.  He also knows eat, more, please, thank you, all done, diaper, hat, light, car, and a bunch more that I can’t remember right now.

IMG_1536

He doesn’t like having to hold still, having things taken away from him, or blueberries.  Weird, right?  All my other kids have loved blueberries from the first taste.

IMG_1234

That said, he does like many other foods.  (Notice the green bean in his left ear?)

IMG_1169

Felix comments on things by pointing at them and making humming noises, like, “Mmmm?”  He has various hums that mean things like, “Wow, that’s cool!”, “Hey, can I have that?”, and “What on earth is THAT?”

IMG_1215

He likes to put things in, take things out, and spread laundry (preferably laundry that used to be folded) all over the floor.  He would LOVE to get things out of the dishwasher, and he knows how to get utensils out of the drawer.

IMG_1179

When we eat at restaurants, he sits in his high chair, dances to the music, and waves at everyone who walks by, including the wait staff, EVERY TIME they come to the table.  People think it’s really darling.  It is.

IMG_0989

When his siblings practice piano, Felix loves to play duets.  They’ll be playing along, when suddenly some very high or very low notes start sneaking in.  He loves it when Hannah holds him to play the piano.  Dancing along is an acceptable substitute for playing along.

IMG_1363

He spends time in the Ergo on our hikes or errands, and for the most part really likes it, although I’m sure when he starts walking he’s going to start objecting to being packed along.

IMG_1367

He understands about fruit, and any time he finds some, he tries to take a bite.  This isn’t as convenient when it’s an avocado…still in its skin.  It’s still more inconvenient when it’s ALL the avocados, one after another, still in their skin.

IMG_1245

Everyone loves Felix, and they argue about who gets to go up to see him first when he wakes up from his nap.  He’s a joy.

Happy Birthday, Felix!  We’re so glad you’re here!

The bottomless pit of food

Our children have started eating voraciously this spring.  Perhaps it's our paleo-ish food choices, or the season, or a growth spurt, but it's starting to seem impossible to keep them fed.

Case in point: after a big breakfast on Saturday, Simeon and I had a chance to go out for brunch together, and we weren't going to pass that up.  I figured we'd have a light meal.

Simeon figured he would have two eggs, two strips of bacon, hash browns, and a mug of cocoa.

Clearly, he's ready to dig in.

And 13 minutes later, it's gone.

What the heck?  Where did it all go?  We'd eaten a big breakfast not two hours before.  Not only had he demolished his brunch, but he was asked for my leftovers.  Amazing.

The children have started calling themselves "bottomless pits of food" and "the ravaging horde" -- and who am I to argue?

Random catching up

Felix, at 10 months (!) today (the 21st), is not a tiny snuggly baby who’ll sleep anywhere any more.  He’s curious and into everything and on the go.  He has a hard time holding still when things are happening, and he doesn’t snuggle much when he’s up and about.

IMG_1027

Except when he’s sick.  Poor guy ran a fever for 4-5 days last week and didn’t feel good at ALL.  Hannah discovered early in his illness that she could rock him to sleep and enjoy a good snuggle of thirty minutes to an hour.  She took full advantage of the opportunity.  Which was really helpful, because if she wasn’t holding him, I was.  He’s better now, and the snuggly naptimes are gone!

IMG_0953

Tess has settled on her ideal breakfast for now:  a two-egg omelet, half a banana, and an apple with sunbutter.  Sometimes she’ll add a quarter of an avocado, too.  This is the kid who used to eat tiny smidgens of things…NO MORE!  She’s discovered the joy of eating!  She even likes (and asks for seconds of) lettuce.  She draws the line at onions and asparagus…for now.  We’ll see if she changes her tune.  But since she’s eating pretty much everything else we put in front of her, it’s tough to complain.

IMG_0959

At Easter, I made sunbutter (sunflower seed butter) cups, like the peanut butter ones, but less deadly to Hannah.  And sweetened with honey.  I realized that none of the kids had ever had a peanut butter cup.  They were delighted with them.  Even the ones who don’t particularly like sunbutter loved the cups.  We then made the recipe for sunbutter and chocolate dairy-free ice cream and it met with similar acclaim.

IMG_1005

Naomi and Hannah are working on a piano duet for their next recital.  It’s going really well.  Their teacher said she’d never had a duet come back so well after only a week.  They’re working together extremely well.  I had some serious doubts about it, but they’re doing such a nice job together, it’s awesome.  Felix, as you can see, would be happy to make it a trio.  But since he won’t count and won’t play the same notes every time, they’re not letting him join in.  Seems somewhat uptight, if you ask Felix.

IMG_1024

Our garage got a new roof, and you better believe the kids thought this machine was awesome!  They would have missed it entirely if they weren’t homeschooled.  As it was, they watched from the windows in Hannah and Tess’s room and loved it.

IMG_1033

Felix, feeling better, decided to raid the napkin drawer.  He can pull himself up and open it and empty (or partially empty) it at will.  At least it’s better than when he eats whatever bits he can find off the floor…

IMG_0960

Naomi and Hannah have also been making many creations with hot glue and natural materials.  This is a fairy tea table made by Naomi, with acorn cups and a tea pot.  Naomi got a book that has been inspiring all kinds of making of things, and the things are really, really cute.  So if you know a girl who likes to create things and can be trusted with a hot glue gun, that book’s a great gift!

Not pictured:  anything growing in my vegetable garden.  BECAUSE my ducks are eating the things I plant.  Despite my efforts to exclude them.  Next step is enclosing each bed with chicken wire.  Then I’ll plant more.  Sigh.

But it’s hard to complain about anything, even garden-destroying ducks, because the spring this year has been glorious so far!

Easter Outfits

We went to the Easter Vigil as a family this year.  It was lovely.  Tess and Sim slept through most of it.  Felix slept through almost to the end, woke up very confused, then flirted with whomever he could for the rest of the Mass.  Hannah and Naomi stayed awake and witnessed two adults receive Baptism.  BUT we didn’t get a family photo.  We did get photos of all the kids, though.

IMG_0933

Sim and Felix got matching outfits this Easter!  Sim was really excited.  Felix didn’t care too much either way.  I think they look adorable, but I could be slightly biased.

IMG_0930

The girls didn’t get matching dresses, but they all got pink this year.  Amazon provided almost all the new outfits, including mine (which didn’t get photographed) and Michael’s tie (which also didn’t get photographed).  (When did Hannah get so TALL?)

IMG_0925

We didn’t get a good picture of Tess’s dress, but we did get a sweet picture of Tess herself.  :)

Michael also has pictures of Tess and Sim sleeping on the pew in front of us.  It was reserved, but only half of it was used, so when they conked out, Michael put them up there to sleep.

Crawling!

Felix crawls!  For real!  He’s been doing so for a little while, but I haven’t updated here because he’s now much more dangerous to himself and his environment, so I have to follow him around, keeping him out of trouble.  And he can be really stealthy.  He was in the living room playing with the kids while I was cooking dinner the other day.  Suddenly I heard a noise that I couldn’t identify.  This is Baby #5, so I don’t take for granted when I hear a noise I can’t identify, if I can possibly help it.  I went to investigate, and there he was, in the bathroom, having the BEST time unrolling the toilet paper.  At least he hadn’t gotten into the toilet yet!

IMG_1007

The best thing about learning to crawl

IMG_1009

according to Felix

IMG_1010

(besides leaving behind one’s very own Trail of Destruction)

IMG_1011

(yep, that’s a sock in my Trail of Destruction!  and an abacus – it’s good to have older siblings!)

IMG_1012

is that one can finally GET

IMG_1013

the things that nobody else

IMG_1014

ever hands to one.

IMG_0912

Yeah.  More on that later.

This and that

At karate today:

Sensei:  We’ll be practicing a round kick, which is the one the white belts have just started to learn.
Simeon:  (raises hand and waits to be called on)  We’re not white belts.

Right, because they have a black stripe now.  Little stinker.

*****

Felix is signing a bit more now.  Well, he’s actually signing “more” now.  And he also does Simeon’s name sign – very cute, and hugely appreciated by Sim, of course.

*****

Felix also learned to sit himself back up from his stomach.  And he’s practicing pulling himself up on things.  Unfortunately, he’s not so great with getting back down after pulling himself up.  More practice needed.

*****

For her birthday, Naomi got a book of different embroidery designs.  Excitement is running high about them.  Naomi’s starting some new projects with many different cute designs, and Sim is learning how to embroider – he’s working on a squirrel.

*****

The girls’ scout troop sells pies to raise funds every year.  The order forms were distributed yesterday.  Hannah pulled out her file from last year’s sale to go over the people we should contact again to sell pies.  She LOVES selling pies.  We’ve already gotten two (new) customers this year.

Part of the love for Hannah is that last year our family got the second-most sales.  She’s pretty sure she can get to first this year.  (Did I mention that Hannah is competitive?)

Good thing the pies are delicious.

*****

Tess discovered the joy that is eating shredded coconut.  I, personally, don’t prefer it, but Tess loves it and had it for snacks twice already today.  And it’s unsweetened.  Go figure.

Whole 30 First Thoughts

IMG_0593

We started our Whole30 on March 2, just after Naomi’s birthday.  It’s been an interesting first week.

For me it hasn’t been too dramatic a change.  I stopped eating gluten just over a year ago, when I started violently disagreeing with it.  And we decided early this year to do the Whole30, which meant that in the 6 weeks or so before we started, I began to experiment with what foods the kids would eat, and trying to figure out how much food we’d need eating this way.  Because of complications with breastfeeding, I haven’t been eating much sugar or dairy, so cutting those out hasn’t been dramatic or difficult for me.

Felix doesn’t notice any difference, because he’s been eating breastmilk, meat, veggies, and fruit anyway, so nothing has changed for him.

The kids also had a fairly soft entry into it, because of my experiments.  They’re annoyed about certain things:  Tess wants her vitamins (added sweetener in the form of fructose means they’re not on the Whole30), Sim wanted honey in his tea, Naomi wants cheese, and Hannah has been hankering to bake.  For the most part, though, they like the food they’re getting.  In fact, we did some maki rolls, and they’re all very enthusiastic about those.

The kids did seem to have some effects from it, though.  Naomi had a couple of meltdowns that I was pretty surprised to see – she’s been meltdown-free for years now, and these were full, weeping on the floor meltdowns.  Hannah had a couple of extremely cranky days.  Tess revisited her earlier phase of easily weeping.  I think Sim was fairly even keel, but even he had his moments last week.  I was just glad that I had eased into it, because the combination of all of us doing the crankies at the same time could have been disastrous.

Tess has been EATING.  It’s pretty great.  She was low weight at her 2 year checkup, and since then I’ve had to do a lot of feeding her at meals.  Lately, though, she’s cleaning her plate with little or no help from me and then asking for MORE MORE MORE.  She’s sometimes eating as much as Sim at a meal, which almost never happened before.

The kids are also eating breakfast soon after getting up, which is a good sign of healthy digestive hormone activity.  Before I’d need to call them (particularly Hannah and Naomi) from their various other occupations to remind them to eat, but lately they’ve been getting themselves into the kitchen and figuring out breakfasts.  Naomi, Sim, and Tess all like plain omelets.

Michael probably had it the hardest as far as transitions go.  He packed sandwiches for lunch most days at work and ate snacks of crackers.  He didn’t get the benefit of easing into it as much as the rest of us, because he kept that up until just before we started.  Last week, as his body was adjusting, he went through some of the things that are listed on the Whole30 timeline

Day 8, today, was pretty good for most of us.  Daylight Savings Time, of course, STINKS, and added its problematic sleep and waking and eating patterns.  We had some trouble at lunch when Sim decided he doesn’t like maki rolls after all (I told him that he could just eat the ingredients separately and not have nori, but the joy of rolling it overpowered him…then he didn’t want to eat it.  I had him eat the ingredients out of the nori).  However, I notice that he’s much less disturbed by difficulties that he encounters (in karate, as well as other places) when he’s eaten the Whole30 way.

Michael felt that his energy was back, his mind clear, and his body functioning normally again.  That’s good news.  He’s also enjoying the lunches I’ve been packing for him.  ;)

The hardest part for me so far has been the amount of time I’ve needed to spend in the kitchen.  There’s a lot of cooking.  I usually try to cook additional things when I’m making one meal (I make Michael’s lunches for the next day when I’m making our lunch or dinner at home) so that I don’t have to make everything from scratch for every meal, but there’s still a lot of cooking – we have 7 eaters in our house!  I actually really like to cook, but I realize that I’m going to need to recruit more help from the kids on certain things.

We haven’t conquered too many situations where we have to eat other people’s food yet.  We opted not to go to the Lenten soup supper at our parish last Friday, which we normally would do.  We could have brought our own soup, but I wasn’t feeling up to fighting the bread battle, especially with Tess, who is convinced that the point of the Whole30 is to ruin her fun, at least when I tell her she can’t have bread.  Because of Spring Ahead, we went to Mass on Saturday evening.  On Sunday, we took a hike as a family instead of bringing the kids to Sunday School, where they would have had snacks to navigate.  (That wasn’t just to avoid the snacks – it was a truly gorgeous day and we wanted to get out there!) We won’t avoid all situations that involve others’ food, but this was somewhat the easier way for the first weekend.

Usually we’d get doughnuts after Mass, but instead I made a smoothie of coconut milk and blueberries.  Whole30 discourages (but doesn’t outlaw) smoothies because drinking calories turns out to be a good way to not pay as much attention to them.  Since we’re not actually in need of weight loss, I don’t think it’s a big deal to have occasional smoothies.  Everyone loved it, too.  (And I think we’re going to try a pineapple one next!)

Someone asked me what I miss most.  Chocolate.

Cub Scouts visit the fire station

As part of Simeon’s year as a Tiger Scout, we have to do a bunch of required outings.  I wasn’t completely sold on these at first, but we’ve had a lot of fun.  In January, we went to a basketball came at the local high school, and last month, we visited Seattle Fire Station 38.

WP_20150221_09_51_27_Pro

The firefighters were really excellent.  They talked about the daily routine of the firefighters and how calls are routed.  They described how technology has changed and improved the work of firefighters.  They also mentioned that they were an in-service fire station, so there was a small chance that a call might come in.

Then they let us climb on the truck – awesome!

WP_20150221_10_18_44_Pro

They also introduced us to all the gear on the truck, which has to cover a variety of jobs: fire, medical, paramedical, car accident, etc.  They are very well prepared – a good example for the scouts!

WP_20150221_10_30_09_Pro

One of the firefighters suited up for us – their gear weighs 50 – 70 pounds!  I didn’t get a picture with his mask on, but the scouts said he looked like a Sith Lord from Star Wars.

WP_20150221_10_41_49_Pro

And just when he was fully suited up … the bell rang.

The speed of the firefighting team was amazing.  Three of them were immediately on the truck, while our tour leader calmly walked us out to the driveway.

WP_20150221_10_44_33_Pro

We did a head count, and when all were accounted for, the last firefighter jumped on the truck and it rolled away.  From bell to bye-bye was probably 60 seconds, tops.  It was amazing.

WP_20150221_10_44_45_Pro WP_20150221_10_44_51_Pro WP_20150221_10_44_58_Pro

And there we were, standing on the driveway.  “Well, thanks for coming, you Scouts.  Have a great Saturday!”  It was a memorable, but somewhat abrupt ending.

Can you guess what playtime looked like when we got home?
