Cub Scouts visit the fire station

As part of Simeon’s year as a Tiger Scout, we have to do a bunch of required outings.  I wasn’t completely sold on these at first, but we’ve had a lot of fun.  In January, we went to a basketball came at the local high school, and last month, we visited Seattle Fire Station 38.

The firefighters were really excellent.  They talked about the daily routine of the firefighters and how calls are routed.  They described how technology has changed and improved the work of firefighters.  They also mentioned that they were an in-service fire station, so there was a small chance that a call might come in.

Then they let us climb on the truck – awesome!

They also introduced us to all the gear on the truck, which has to cover a variety of jobs: fire, medical, paramedical, car accident, etc.  They are very well prepared – a good example for the scouts!

One of the firefighters suited up for us – their gear weighs 50 – 70 pounds!  I didn’t get a picture with his mask on, but the scouts said he looked like a Sith Lord from Star Wars.

And just when he was fully suited up … the bell rang.

The speed of the firefighting team was amazing.  Three of them were immediately on the truck, while our tour leader calmly walked us out to the driveway.

We did a head count, and when all were accounted for, the last firefighter jumped on the truck and it rolled away.  From bell to bye-bye was probably 60 seconds, tops.  It was amazing.

And there we were, standing on the driveway.  “Well, thanks for coming, you Scouts.  Have a great Saturday!”  It was a memorable, but somewhat abrupt ending.

Can you guess what playtime looked like when we got home?
