Duck house!

My parents visited for about a week so they could be here for the two First Communions last weekend, and my dad kindly agreed to build our ducks a house for when they move outside.  Michael was extremely glad about this, since he’s still working on building the duck fence for when the ducks move outside.

Duck houses are a bit tricky because they have to be snug against predators, have room for the ducks, have some ventilation, be tall enough that the ducks don’t strain their necks by having to stoop inside, keep the weather out,…well, there are a lot of demands to satisfy.

Dad and I worked together to come up with a plan, which he then spent three of the days they were here building.  Hannah helped.  Luckily, the weather was good.  In fact, it was so good that one day was 87 degrees.  I would have wilted in that kind of weather doing that kind of work (and it probably would have been most amusing, since I’m not trained on the power tools and have a rather large belly at the moment), but Dad loves it, and it wasn’t humid like in Texas, so he didn’t mind too much.  Or at least he said he didn’t.

He spent a long time constructing it and it came out great!  We really, really appreciate his help – Michael doesn’t have that kind of time to put into duck house construction these days, and he wasn’t in the least disappointed not to have this project to look forward to.  Plus, look how cool it looks!

Dad was about 3/4 of the way finished when I realized I should have asked him to take pictures of the step-by-step process so I could post THAT here on the blog.  So I had a couple of suggestions for him.  One:  He could take it all apart and then put it back together, taking step-by-step photos.  Two:  He could build another one, taking step-by-step photos.  For some reason, he declined both options.  Strange.

Despite his lack of dedication to the Step by Step Duck House Construction blog post, we are so grateful to have this built.  Thanks, Dad!
