Weekends with Chesterton: We love books!

Joining Sarah at Amongst Lovely Things again this weekend!

I’ve really enjoyed the essays in Tremendous Trifles.  They’re short, which makes them easy to read in one sitting, they run the gamut from hilarious to serious, and they give a good amount of insight to chew on throughout the day.

Today’s quote is one that I immediately identified with as I read it.  There are plenty of parts of Chesterton’s work that have sounded, at first, like foreign language that it was surprising and reassuring to discover in Chesterton a kindred spirit.

“…of the books which I was really fond I can still remember, not only the shape and bulk and binding, but even the position of the printed words on many of the pages.”

-- G.K. Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles, “A Somewhat Improbable Story”

I do like the Kindle for so many things, but there is nothing, nothing like holding a book and absorbing it that way.  It’s great fun watching my kids learn to love books, too; getting to share my old favorites and discover new gems with them brings a lot of joy to our lives as parents.  I love finding one that makes the kids beg for “just a little more, PLEASE!” at bedtime.

I just ordered a Kindle and I know that in many ways it's going to be hard!

Yes, indeed! We humans are sensory, physical creatures, so it's no wonder that we enjoy a physical book that tickles our senses. I have to admit that the Kindle is great for reading while I'm nursing, but I find that I don't want to read certain types of books on it (especially books that read and loved as a child in their physical form).
