On Sunday, at our parish’s Advent workshop, both girls made a craft that helps remind children to do good deeds during Advent. They each made a Baby Jesus figure and decorated a manger for him. Then they each got a bag of straw. The idea is that, for each good deed they do (and remember, of course), they put a piece of straw in the manger. The hope is that by Christmas the manger will be a lovely soft bed for Baby Jesus, and their hearts will be a lovely soft place for Jesus to come, after all those good deeds.
Monday morning I overheard:
H: How many straws are in your manger, Naomi?
N: 8.
H: Oh. You’re beating me. I only have 6.
Why is it that I feel as if the point is being missed here?
