Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry is the fort that the British were bombarding when Francis Scott Key was inspired to write The Star-Spangled Banner, our National Anthem.

It was a beautiful day, and quite warm.

Sim was excited about the cannons.

This flag isn’t nearly as big as the original Star-Spangled Banner, but it does have 15 stars and 15 stripes, the way it did.

Sim:  Mama, why is there a jail?

Yeah, you try coming up with a good explanation for a three-year-old on the spot.  Not as easy as it seems.

We sang the national anthem all together up on the point of the star – the fort is built in a star shape.

More cannons – these ones are Civil War-era.

Hannah wants to get a junior ranger badge from every state, and Fort McHenry provided a Maryland one.  The two oldest from each family earned a badge.  We learned a lot from the exercises.

We all really enjoyed our trip to Fort McHenry – we recommend it!

There is so much awesome in this post I don't know where to start...perhaps with the singing of the National Anthem next to Revolutionary War cannons?! -Chris
